Final Fantasy II: Locations and other random notes
by Estirose

==Introduction/Disclaimer/Notes==
I wrote this because I keep getting hits on my dialogue guide from people who are stuck in various places. This might help if you're looking for various things (though not treasure from dungeons, for the most part). Direction-wise, I use West for things in the direction of my left hand, and East for things in the direction of my right hand. Also, I played this on a GBA and an iOS device, so my spellings conform to those. Some of these entries are very spoilery for later events. Also note that this is not a walkthrough; if you need to know where in Kashuan Keep to get, say, Egil's Torch, this is not the guide for you.

Please feel free to copy this for personal use, but please don't upload it elsewhere.

As a totally random note, for iOS users (this should also work if this game gets released on Android), exiting out of the game mid-battle will generally save you from having to reload. I use this trick a lot on iOS, and it seems to work on the Android FFIII port as well.

Versions:
0.4: All locations listed. More detail on treasures later.
0.3: Now through Mysidia and Tropical Island.
0.2: Typo corrections, Salamand, Semitt Falls, and Arcane Labyrinth.
0.1: Initial version. Notes, and Altair-Poft.

Altair
-------
Location type: City
Where: Your starting location, southeast of Fynn
Why you'll be spending time here: It's where you start! Also where you get missions from Hilda for a lot of the game.
Things you'll want to get: Heal, Fire, Blizzard, Thunder spells.
Note: You can meet Paul and Gordon here, if you want to. They'll still react as if you did, even if you didn't.

Fynn
------
Location type: City (the castle is in a different entry)
Where: Northwest of Altair
Why you'll be spending time here: It's where you'll get your missions from Hilda later on. You'll also get Scott's ring here.
Things you'll want to get: Golden armor! You can get this early on in the game if you hike Minwu's teleport to 3 or 4 and provoke fights with the Captains. Be prepared to load from save a lot, if the enemy hits Minwu first.
Note: Scott and his ring are in the hidden passageway in the pub. To get there, go out the back of Fynn *very carefully* and skirt around until you get to the pub. Do not speak to anybody but the bartender, tell him "Wild Rose", the secret passage is where he was.

Gatrea
--------
Location type: City
Where: Northwest of Altair, southeast of Fynn. It's the little town you see when you're heading to Fynn.
Why you'll be spending time there: You need to heal and/or revive, and you don't want to go all the way to Fynn or Altair.
Things you'll want to get: Not much. It has an inn and a revive sanctuary.

Paloom
---------
Location type: City
Where: Northeast of Altair. You'll need Minwu's canoe to get there.
Why you'll be spending time there: To get rides to Poft. Also, to meet Leila later on.
Things you'll want to get: Not much, but check out their shops just in case.
Note: If you go around talking to people the first time you enter, one sailor will hit on Maria, and a girl will hit on Firion. The sailor is in the southeast part of the town, and the girl on the northwest.

Poft
-----
Location type: City
Where: Very northeast of Paloom. You can get there by walking from Paloom or taking the 32 Gil ferry.
Why you'll be spending time there: You need a ride back to Poft, you need to heal or get supplies, or you need to use Cid's airship.
Things you'll want to get: The airship, after Cid gives it to you.
Note: In order to get to the airship, you need to exit the town so that you're on the world map. If you've purchased a ride (or if he's given you the ship), it'll be in the back of town, in that odd uninhabited section.

Salamand
------------
Location type: City
Where: Northwest of Poft, against a mountain range.
Why you'll be spending time there: To rest and recover, and also to talk to Josef. He's in the northeast part of the town.
Things you'll want to get: the teleport spell.
Note: When you first go there, the two guys left in town are Josef and the guy to the southwest by the potions. I'm still not sure what's going on with the guy by the potions shop.

Semitt Falls
-----------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Southwest of Salamand. Basically, keep going to the west until you reach the sea, and use the stream until you reach the lake and the cave entrance.
Why you'll be spending time there: First, to go get mythril (and save Nelly, Josef's daughter), and a second time to get Josef's snowcraft.
Things you'll want to get there: Mythril. It's way at the bottom, guarded by a Sergeant. If you didn't buy teleport, you'll be walking out.
Note: The blue crystal is the marker for where Josef stows his snowcraft and is not important your first time through. When getting the snowcraft, the entrance is on the top right wall.

Arcane Labyrinth (PSP/iOS only)
----------------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Various places, most notably on either side of Salamand. There's a third very southwest of Bafsk, and a fourth one opens near Poft if you beat all the levels on the other three. You'll see one of them on your way to Semitt Falls.
Why you'll want to be spending time there: Some of the dungeons are rather fun! They're based on the keywords you get as you go through the game.
Things you'll want to get there: Treasure. And if you beat the last boss, some nifty-but-useless spells.
Note: These are completely optional. You don't have to go into them at all.

Bafsk
-------
Location type: City
Where: Northeast of Poft. It's the one just south of the mountain range with the cave you can't access.
Why you'll want to be spending time there: Rest and of course, going to destroy the Dreadnought
Things you'll want to get there: Check the equipment for sale.
Note: Talk to the guard to the southwest guarding the path for a way into the dungeon. Note that you must be sure that Borghen is in the town before trying this!

Bafsk Sewers
-----------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Down beneath Bafsk.
Why you'll want to be spending time there: To try to destroy the Dreadnought.
Things you'll want to get there: Pass (to the east of where the Dark Knight was after the cutscene)
Note: There's no boss battle here, so feel free to use MP. (If you haven't been leveling up the healing spell, start doing so, because Minwu will leave soon.)

Snow Cave
---------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: In the snowfields above Salamand. Note that you need a snowcraft.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To get the Goddess's Bell!
Things to get: Goddess's Bell.
Note: You'll have two boss fights, make sure you've leveled up Blizzard.

Kashuan Keep/Kashuan
-------------------------------
Location type: Dungeon (Castle)
Where: South of Bafsk. Use Cid's airship to get there, unless you really want to level up your HP.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: You want to get Egil's Torch (and the Sunfire!)
Things to get: Golden Armor, Egil's Torch.
Note: Once you get Egil's Torch, leave, get the Sunfire from the entrance to the keep, and watch the cutscene.

Chocobo Forest
--------------------
Location type: Wilderness
Where: South of Kashuan Keep; look for a blank spot in the forest directly south.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: You can get a chocobo, which will save you time in getting back to the Altair area, since you don't have to fight enemies.
Things to get: Chocobo (temporary)
Note: The chocobo is fast; if you're good at talking to fast walkers, you'll be fine catching it.

Dreadnought
----------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Way north of Fynn (bring lots of Tents!)
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: Because you have a Princess to rescue, and a ship to blow up.
Things to get: Not things, but you'll want to make sure you rescue Hilda and Cid.
Note: You remember that pass in Bafsk? Show it to the guard and he'll back away. Also, pay attention to the portrait for the Dark Knight. Does he look familiar?

Deist
-------
Location type: Castle
Where: Northeast of Salamand, on an island (you'll need Leila's ship to get there).
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To make contact with the Dragoons.
Things to get: Lots of treasure!
Note: No monsters here, but there's also no inn. Bring plenty of tents and other healing items for the next dungeon.

Deist Caverns
------------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: North of Deist Castle
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: You'll go there for the Pendant, and also to get the Egg to the Spring.
Things to get: Some useful armor and weapons.
Note: This is a dungeon where you'll be backtracking a fair amount.

Coliseum
------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: South of Kashuan Keep (very south) - use Leila's boat to get there
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: You won't, really, but you do get to finally rescue Princess Hilda.
Things to get: There's an Elixir, but Hilda's the most important.
Note: You'll fight a boss at the beginning of this dungeon, but the rest is pretty simple. Also, there's a walk-through wall in the prison area.

Rebel Camp
----------------
Location type: City (sort of)
Where: To the west of Gatrea; it looks like a tent
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To get orders to take Castle Fynn.
Things to get: Nothing, unless you count orders.
Note: This only shows up after you rescue Hilda and before you retake Fynn.

Castle Fynn
---------------
Location type: Castle/Dungeon
Where: right behind Fynn
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: You're liberating it! Also, this is where you'll report to Hilda and Gordon for the rest of the game.
Things to get: Treasure.
Note: This becomes a non-monster-laden Castle after you liberate it. (However, if you fail to open one chest, the Monster-In-A-Box is still there and you still have to fight it.)

Fynn Dungeons
--------------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Below Castle Fynn (use Ekhmet Taloss on Northwesternmost throne room wall to get there)
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To get the White Mask.
Things to get: White Mask. Also, treasure.

Tropical Island
-------------------
Location type: Dungeon (see notes)
Where: Very far south of Altair, Southwest of the Coliseum
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: The Black Mask! Also, you can buy things from the merchants in the village (but no inn facilities are available).
Things to get: Black Mask, treasure.
Note: There's a field with natives in the early part of the dungeon. Some of the natives are merchants who happily take gil.

Mysidia
----------
Location type: City
Where: Very far southwest of Fynn
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To rest, restock, and get spells! The library is also interesting, though optional. Also, you'll want to put the White Mask on the Goddess.
Things to get: Spells. You can pick up any spell you missed from prior shops, as well as Holy, which is a nice spell.
Note: The Goddess Statue, where you place the White Mask, is down the steps in the south part of town.

Mysidia Cave
-----------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Southeast of Mysidia, around mountains (take a tent or two)
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To get the Crystal Rod
Things to get: Crystal Rod
Note: Remember the Black Mask you got at the Tropical Island? Guess what's going to be used on the Doppelganger on level 1....

Leviathan
------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: South of Altair, at the entrance to the island ring around the Mysidian Tower
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: You won't, but at least you'll get Ricard.
Things to get: A new ship, some new armor and weapons.
Note: There are a bunch of civilians stuck in there that you can talk to, but it's Ricard that's the important one.

Mysidian Tower/Tower of Mysidia
---------------------------------------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: South of Altair, on an island ringed by another island.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To get Ultima, and to meet up with Minwu.
Things to get: Plenty of armor, four random attribute boosts, and the Ultima spell.
Note: There are plenty of places where you get hurt crossing, so bring plenty of healing items.

Cyclone
----------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: Northeast of Fynn. It only exists right after you finish the Mysidian Tower, and goes away after you finish the dungeon.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To defeat the Emperor so that he doesn't destroy the rest of the land.
Things to get: Treasure, mostly.
Note: You need the wyvern to get here; you need to make sure you've left the egg to hatch in Deist, and then use the pendant on the large mirror that's up the stairs in the west side hallway in Castle Fynn.

Castle Palamecia
---------------------
Location type: Dungeon
Where: To the east of the Coliseum, southeast of Kashuan.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time there: To deal with Leon, the Dark Knight.
Things to get: Treasure.
Note: There is no boss battle here, so you don't need to save up resources. Unequip Ricard unless you're on a GBA, PSP, or iOS system and plan to play Soul of Rebirth.

Jade Passage/Pandaemonium
-------------------------------------
Location type: Dungeons
Where: To the northeast of Mysidia, and to the west or so of Palamecia. It's that long bit jutting out of the Mysidian portion of the map.
Why you'll be wanting to spend time here: To defeat the Emperor once again!
Things to get here: Various very powerful pieces of armor and weapons.
Note: I've put these two together because Jade Passage leads straight to Pandaemonium. Between them, this is a very long dungeon, so run around, level up your skills and spells, and buy all the equipment you need, because this is the dungeon with the Big Boss at the end, and you don't want to be caught short. (3000+ hp for everybody if possible!)
